San Diego County is taking action toward improving local public safety services, specifically within the San Diego County Probation Department.

In a document submitted by County Supervisor Terra Lawson-Remer and Chairwoman Nora Vargas to the Board of Supervisors Tuesday, they detailed actions to prioritize the mental health and well-being of probation officers.

They said the department faces difficulty recruiting and retaining officers due to the high demands of the position which include working in high stress situations.

In response, Lawson-Remer and Vargas made two recommendations.

Firstly, they want the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) to work in partnership with the Probation Department to come up with ways on how to enhance the wellness program for staff.

Secondly, they want to conduct an independent consultant to review staff workloads. The consultant must have no previous working relationship with probation staff or the department.
