Supervisor Terra Lawson-Remer and the San Diego County Board of Supervisor today approved a 45 year lease agreement between the County and City for the now dilapidated Mira Mesa Epicentre. The agreement, championed by Supervisor Lawson-Remer, means the County will begin renovating and eventually operate the recreation center for youth and families.  The County has committed $10.5 million to support the renovation. Construction is expected to begin this fall.

“A new Epicentre will change Mira Mesa for the better,” said Supervisor Lawson-Remer, Vice-Chair, Board of Supervisors. “We’re getting rid of an unsightly eyesore and replacing it with a community gathering place that can be enjoyed by folks from all walks of life for many years to come. I am excited to have led the charge on this redevelopment, and I appreciate Councilmember Kent Lee’s partnership. Together, we’re making the community’s wish for a new Epicentre as reality.”

On July 2, the City of San Diego approved the lease agreement between the City and County. At the City of San Diego, Councilmember Kent Lee was the driving force in getting the deal done.

“This partnership between the City and County will deliver on a decades-long community dream. I want to thank our County Supervisors and all the people who have lent their voices in support of this project, from local community groups to students at Mira Mesa High School. I’ve heard from so many residents asking when this property will be brought back to life, and this lease agreement is one of the final steps needed to re-activate this building for the benefit of the community,” said Lee, District 6 City Councilmember, City of San Diego.

The Mira Mesa Epicentre will be reopen as a recreation center for youth, with programming that reflect the preferences of the community, including:

  • tutoring,

  • mentoring,

  • career counseling,

  • performing and visual arts,

  • gardening,

  • cooking,

  • various recreational classes,

  • intergenerational activities, and

  • rentable space for meetings and events

Design features of the facility will include the community’s preference for a lounge area, game tables and consoles, workstations and a homework area, a music room, fitness equipment, a stage, a demonstration kitchen, and a multipurpose space.

Preferred exterior amenities include central gathering areas, open turf areas, garden areas, and outdoor sport courts.

The Mira Mesa Epicentre is slated to open in Fiscal Year 2025-26.
