Taking decisive action to strengthen regional wildfire preparedness, Acting Chair Terra Lawson-Remer and Acting Vice Chair Joel Anderson convened public safety leaders to present a comprehensive plan on emergency preparedness during today’s Board of Supervisors meeting. Following the presentation, the Board voted unanimously to approve critical policies to enhance wildfire response, including the purchase of twin-engine helicopters, water tenders, and advancing innovative brush management initiatives.

“Today, we responded decisively to calls from our public safety leaders to protect San Diego County from the devastating impacts of wildfires,” said Chair Lawson-Remer. “By equipping our firefighters with the tools they need and educating residents on how to support first responders, we are safeguarding lives, property, and our region’s future. I’m proud to lead this effort alongside our dedicated public safety officials.”

Key actions approved today include:

  • Purchase of a Twin-Engine Helicopter: Equipped for day-and-night operations, this cutting-edge aircraft will provide vital aerial support to combat wildfires and bolster regional resilience.

  • Water Tenders for Frontline Firefighting: These mobile water storage units will ensure firefighters have reliable access to water in remote and high-risk areas.

  • Comprehensive Brush Management: A directive to evaluate County properties for vegetation clearing and explore modern solutions like livestock grazing and air curtain burners to mitigate wildfire risks.

The presentation highlighted the critical role of County departments in preparing for and responding to disasters, emphasizing the importance of inter-agency coordination, community engagement, and equitable access to resources.

“This work is about protecting every corner of San Diego County—from urban neighborhoods to rural communities impacted by wildfires,” added Supervisor Lawson-Remer. “These investments will make our County safer, stronger, and more resilient.”
