Description

Last month, the U.S. House passed the so-called  “One Big Beautiful Bill Act.” This week, we got the numbers. And they’re brutal for San Diego County:

  • 🥫 $276 million cut from food assistance (SNAP)

  • 🧠 $10 million cut from behavioral health

  • 🏠 $20 million cut from homelessness programs

  • 🩺 Hundreds of thousands of San Diegans at risk of losing Medi-Cal

  • ⏰ More red tape for families trying to get help

  • 💼 More strain on the frontline County workers who serve them

These numbers are shocking. Are you shocked? Don’t feel bad if you didn’t read the full bill - apparently, some of  the Republicans who voted for it didn’t either.

But here in San Diego County, we do read the fine print. And we act.

Since taking office in 2021, I’ve worked hard to do the opposite of what this bill does:

  • ⏱️ Cut wait times for families applying for Medi-Cal and CalFresh

  • 🧩 Streamline access to health and social services

  • 🚨 Add new treatment slots for mental health and addiction

This bill is a crisis, but we have a chance to act before it becomes a catastrophe.

Next week, Supervisor Monica Montgomery Steppe and I are urging the Board to develop a plan: a responsible, forward-looking strategy to protect the County’s ability to serve those in need.

We’re pushing for smart staffing and funding solutions now, so we can keep as many people as possible housed, fed, and cared for, even in the face of federal cuts.

But with a politically divided Board of Supervisors, we can’t take anything for granted.

That’s where you come in. 📣 Submit an E-Comment today urging the Board to support this proposal. Because doing nothing would be reckless, and if we fail to plan then we plan to fail.

We have an opportunity to keep people housed, fed, and cared for, but if we do not act, the consequences will be real:

  • ❌ More people losing health coverage

  • ❌ More children and seniors going hungry

  • ❌ More families pushed into homelessness

Tell the Board: Let’s be prepared. Let’s be responsible. Let’s lead.
