After a national joint search, California Special Assistant Attorney General Damon Brown has been selected to lead the County Counsel’s office pending a vote by the Board of Supervisors on January 13.
Brown currently serves as Special Assistant Attorney General in the office of California Attorney General Rob Bonta, where he acts as a senior legal and policy advisor on public safety, civil rights, consumer protection, immigration, education, and voting rights. He brings more than two decades of experience across public service and private sector practice, representing public agencies and private businesses in a range of civil matters, including labor and employment, class action, and constitutional and civil rights cases. Brown previously served as City Attorney for Compton, where he advised elected officials and guided the city through complex legal, housing, and economic development matters.
“My career in public service has been rooted in civic engagement and a belief that effective leadership at the national, state, and local levels can advance justice, equity, and the public good. I am grateful to be considered for the appointment of County Counsel to bring those values to the role,” said Damon Brown.
Brown earned his Juris Doctor from Vanderbilt University Law School and holds a Bachelor of Arts in political science and African American studies from the University of California, Berkeley. In addition to his legal practice, he has contributed to legal education as an adjunct professor at Loyola Law School. His professional service includes leadership roles with several legal organizations, including the State Bar Commission on Judicial Nominees Evaluation and multiple bar associations focused on advancing equity and excellence in the legal profession.
Board Chair Terra Lawson-Remer said she looks forward to San Diego County Counsel’s next chapter.
“The County Counsel’s Office plays a critical role in protecting the public trust and upholding the rule of law - standing up for consumers, safeguarding public dollars, and advancing a modern County government that works for working families,” said San Diego County Board Chair Terra Lawson-Remer. “Damon Brown brings deep experience in public law, and we look forward to working with him in this role.”
