County Chair Calls for Peaceful Demonstrations Following Killing of U.S. Citizen by ICE in Minnesota
Ahead of a weekend expected to include demonstrations nationwide following the killing of a U.S. citizen and mother in Minneapolis, San Diego County Board of Supervisors Chair Terra Lawson-Remer urged San Diegans to raise their voice in protest peacefully, safely, and with care for one another.
“An ICE agent shot and killed a U.S. citizen and mother, and the Trump Administration’s response has been to obscure the facts rather than own the consequences,” Lawson-Remer said. “When the federal government responds to the loss of life with spin instead of accountability, people must speak out — peacefully, with care for one another, and moral clarity.”
Lawson-Remer emphasized that peaceful protest has long been a powerful and essential tool for protecting civil rights and holding institutions accountable.
“Peaceful protest is how communities have always forced change and defended democracy,” she said. “It is strongest when it is grounded in nonviolence, mutual care, and moral clarity.”
Lawson-Remer has been a consistent supporter of peaceful civic action in San Diego in response to federal immigration enforcement practices. In recent months, she has served as a lead convener alongside immigrant families, labor leaders, and faith organizations of the regular, nonviolent 10AM Thursday morning demonstrations outside U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement offices in Downtown San Diego, calling for due process, transparency, and accountability.
Lawson-Remer is also leading the passage of the County’s CLEAR Ordinance, strengthening civil rights protections and setting clear limits on local cooperation with federal immigration enforcement to safeguard due process. She has also supported federal legislation requiring immigration enforcement officers to clearly identify themselves and prohibiting the use of masks or other concealment that obscures an agent’s identity during enforcement actions, reinforcing transparency and public trust.
Upcoming Demonstrations This Weekend
Peaceful demonstrations are planned across the San Diego region this weekend, with events scheduled on Saturday, January 10, in Pacific Beach, Mira Mesa, Del Mar, Encinitas, and Chula Vista, and on Sunday, January 11, in Escondido. Most events are scheduled between 10:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.
