Fake Agents, Real Danger
With Halloween right around the corner, there’s one costume that is generating real fear.
Across the country, people have begun posing as federal immigration officers and are showing up at homes, flashing fake badges, and threatening residents for profit.
Why is this happening? When real ICE agents operate in secrecy, refuse to identify themselves, and detain citizens and noncitizens alike, it blurs the line between law enforcement and lawlessness and puts all of us at risk.
That’s why I’m leading County action to fight back.
Fake Badges, Real Danger
A recent CNN investigation found more reports of ICE impersonators this year than during the last four presidential terms combined. These predators are using fake ICE gear, including jackets, patches, badges, and vests, that can be bought online for next to nothing.
I’m directing County Counsel — San Diego County’s attorneys — to pursue cease-and-desist orders and coordinate with state and federal regulators to stop companies that enable these impostors by profiting from fake law-enforcement gear.
And I’m calling on Congress to pass Senator Alex Padilla’s VISIBLE Act, which would require immigration officers to clearly identify themselves and ban face coverings that hide their identities.
Because trust in law enforcement depends on visibility, accountability, and the rule of law — not fear and confusion.
Counterfeit Costumes, But a Real Culture of Chaos
Behind this problem is a larger one: many real ICE agents are already operating with little oversight and anonymity. This type of behavior from federal law enforcement creates an opening for bad actors to step in and abuse this fear.
When the public can’t tell the difference between legitimate officers and impostors, everyone loses — especially the communities already targeted by exploitation and fear.
In San Diego County, we’re drawing the line. We’re saying no to masked federal chaos, no to deception, and no to the idea that accountability is optional.
