When Democracy is Tested, San Diego Shows Up
Across the country, people are feeling squeezed — by rising costs, by global instability, and by a growing sense that the rules are not being applied fairly.
Here in San Diego, we are confronting that reality directly.
At the Otay Mesa detention facility, federal authorities have blocked lawful public health oversight even as serious concerns are raised about conditions inside. Our County is in federal court right now because transparency and due process are not optional. No one is above the law.
Moments like this can make people feel powerless.
But history tells a different story:
When communities organize and show up, democracy corrects course.
That is why this weekend, San Diegans across our region will gather in peaceful demonstrations as part of the No Kings protests.

Remember showing up matters.
It builds the public pressure that protects basic rights. It strengthens the local movements that change policy. And it reminds leaders, at every level, that they are accountable to the people they serve.
Power in America does not belong to strongmen or special interests. It belongs to the people, when we choose to use it. I hope you will stand with thousands of your neighbors this weekend.
In service and solidarity,
