It Makes My Stomach Drop

Description

They’re everywhere! Kids on e-bikes, adults on e-bikes, groups of people on e-bikes — flying down streets, weaving through traffic, close calls that make your stomach drop (sometimes without a helmet).

As a mom and someone who bikes regularly, this hits close to home for me.

There are a lot of benefits to e-bikes. However, our kids need to be prepared for the roads they're riding on (and adults need to follow the rules, too).

Here's how you can join me to be part of the solution this Tuesday or on several dates coming up this summer.

A Convo That Could Save a Life

As a parent and someone who bikes regularly, I get why e-bikes have taken off — they give kids freedom, and make life a little simpler for busy families so they don’t have to drive their kiddos everywhere. I want that to continue.

But here’s the reality: E-bike crashes are now one of the leading causes of trauma for youth under 18 in parts of our region.

Most young riders have never had any real training. They don't understand blind spots, stopping distance, or how quickly a situation can turn dangerous.

And some companies are deliberately selling high-powered electric motorcycles as "e-bikes," skirting our laws and misleading families.

So let’s get the facts out there! My office is hosting a free virtual webinar on Tuesday, May 12 at 6 p.m. with medical experts from Scripps — the people seeing these injuries firsthand.

You can register for the webinar here

And across the County, we're expanding free, hands-on e-bike safety training for youth ages 12–16, in partnership with the San Diego County Bicycle Coalition. Every participant receives a free helmet:
