As the Trump Administration cuts Medicaid and withholds billions in healthcare funding from California, the San Diego County Board of Supervisors voted today to fight back — overcoming opposition from Supervisor Jim Desmond.

The resolution, authored by Chair Terra Lawson-Remer, opposes nearly $1 trillion in federal Medicaid cuts and demands the immediate release of more than $2.1 billion in Medicaid funding being withheld from California.

More than 840,000 San Diegans rely on Medi-Cal, including approximately 280,000 children. Beginning in January, roughly 327,000 local recipients could face new federal work-reporting requirements. More than 50,000 San Diegans also rely on in-home supportive services connected to the funding dispute.

“Washington is attacking our healthcare. That MAGA agenda had support on our Board today — but it is out of step with San Diego. We fought for healthcare that is more affordable, more accessible, and there when our community members need it.”

“None of these people who need it are going to lose it,” said Supervisor Desmond about Medicaid, contradicting staff estimates that up to 170,000 San Diegans face losses or reductions in healthcare coverage.

The County will send the resolution to President Donald Trump, HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., and CMS Administrator Dr. Mehmet Oz.
